The last week of November sees renowned dance improvisation company State of Flux present a season at the hottest new venue in Melbourne, The Northcote Town Hall. As part of this season they have invited Flemington-based dancer Bronwyn Ritchie to perform a short solo.
State of Flux have been researching, teaching and performing improvisation for the past decade, during which time they have co-curated Melbourne's only regular forum for performance improvisation, Conundrum. They have performed at festivals around Australia including The High Beam Festival in Adelaide, Antistatic in Sydney and Precipice in Canberra.
Their work, while heavily influenced by Contact Improvisation, extends to an amalgam of related body performance techniques. They are one of the first dance companies in Australia to have a member with a physical disability and, notably, the age range of the five members spans more than 3 decades.
Following on from their performances in the 3D season at Dancehouse, State of Flux will be working with internationally acclaimed musician and composer Rae Howell. Rae, based in Thornbury, has been presenting her Sunwrae series with small chamber ensembles performing her compositions. She recently released a CD and DVD from the last Sunwrae series. www.sunwrae.com
Bronwyn Ritchie has been making and performing dance for the last 15 years. She has been performing with Shelley Lasica since 2002 firstly in History Situation and then the Play in a Room series. She has also worked with Rosalind Crisp and Danni von der Borch. Her first solo work was presented as part of The Dance Card at Dancehouse in 2005.
