Under the guidance of Director Cymbeline Buhler, recently returned from five years working in Germany and New York, Frolic has been created collaboratively by young emerging artists, and established professional artists working with a group of culturally diverse young people from Melbourne’s Western suburbs.

The performance space is Signal, the re-appropriated old Flinders Street Signal Box that is now one of Melbourne’s most exciting new performances spaces.

This exciting, highly experimental new work combines theatrical presentation and interactive performance art, drawing the audience through an ever-changing landscape in which they are observers, then central participants, then again become observers before transforming into independent party-goers.

Frolic operates as an adventure trail, as the audience travels through each section of a party, they journey around the world, experiencing aspects of celebratory events from Melbourne’s many cultures.

Frolic has been created in an adventurous and unique manner. The process began with inducting young people into ‘party research teams’. These teams, facilitated and supported by the lead artists, Cymbeline Buhler, Katherine Branch and Paul Binns set out to investigate and gather material about the diverse manners in which the cultures represented in the performing group: Sudanese, Nigerian, Phillipino, Vietnamese, European and others - celebrated.

The material, including interview transcripts, recordings and photographs then became the basis for the work.
