Celebrating its 30th Birthday in 2010, Theatre works continues to be a centre for innovative theatre and takes great pride in nurturing the artistic community. Theatre Works began in 1980 as a collective of VCA graduates including Hannie Rayson, Caz Howard and Peter Sommerfeld to name a few.
With a strong emphasis on new Australian works performed in unusual and interesting locations, It quickly developed a reputation as a leader in Location theatre with a number of their early productions being performing in unusual locations around Melbourne, including Trams, boats, old mansions and pubs. Two of the company's most memorable early productions are Storming St Kilda by Tram, performed on a moving tram, and Living Rooms, performed at St Kilda's Linden Gallery.
In 1985 the company moved to its current location in Acland St, St Kilda, holding performances in the local church, the parish hall and at on-site locations. Theatre Works' latter productions evolved in style and content, with an increasing emphasis on mythology, storytelling and adaptations.
Theatre Works has a strong and dedicated audience base, interested in theatre and open to new theatrical experiences. Theatre Works’ facilities include a flexible and open studio style theatre with a seating capacity of 144, a licensed cafe and bar, full disabled access, the Foyer Gallery with frequently changing exhibitions, and of course St Kilda's famous cafes and restaurants within easy walking distance.
