The Store Room
At The Store Room you’ll experience the work of some of Melbourne’s new wave of theatre practitioners bravely pushing the boundaries of theatrical form and content.
The Store Room, founded by actors Ben Harkin and Todd MacDonald, exploded onto the Melbourne theatre scene in December 1999.
Originally used for storage, the top floor of a local pub in North Fitzroy was converted into a 63-seat black-box theatre with the aim of energizing and rebuilding Melbourne's depleted independent theatre community.
The Currently hosts approximately 20 productions a year, including: INSTORAGE - a curated season of up to 6 productions; Little Boxes - a series of workshops with a public presentation for works in development; Reading Room - a monthly series of play readings; and 4-5 seasons when the theatre is rented to outside productions.
Hire costs are kept to a minimum with the aim of returning as much of the Box Office as possible to the productions.
INSTORAGE productions are given free hire of the theatre for one week’s rehearsal and a three week season; technical assistance on bump in and bump out; booking line and FOH; basic publicity and marketing through Age advertising, the website and our brochure. There is a minimal FOH admin fee.
Outside Hirers are charged $990 (includes GST) per 5 show week or 27.5% of gross box office takings (whichever is greater). Additional shows are charged @ $110 per performance. There is a minimal FOH administration fee and a small charge for use of our house technician for bump in and bump out.
