Theatreworks, a medium-sized performance space in the heart of St Kilda, has a rich and extensive history of producing quality, alternative in-house productions, while also providing a base for external companies to develop a
Theatreworks has been a centre for innovative theatre for 24 years, taking great pride in nurturing the artistic community. Theatreworks began in 1981 as a collective community theatre company based in Melbourne's eastern suburbs. With a strong emphasis on new Australian works performed in unusual and interesting locations, Theatreworks quickly received recognition as one of Melbourne's emerging companies. In 1985 the company moved to our current location in Acland St, St Kilda, holding performances in the local church, the parish hall and at on-site locations. Two of the company's most memorable productions are Storming St Kilda by Tram, performed on a moving tram, and Living Rooms, performed at St Kilda's Linden Gallery. Theatreworks' latter productions evolved in style and content, with an increasing emphasis on mythology, storytelling and adaptations. Theatreworks seats up to 160, making it the only medium-sized venue located city-south.
Theatreworks is a flexible and open space, so the exact configuration changes from production to production. Theatreworks has a strong and dedicated audience base, interested in theatre and open to new theatrical experiences. Theatreworks’ facilities include a licensed cafe and bar, full disabled access, the Foyer Gallery with frequently changing exhibitions, and of course St Kilda's famous cafes and restaurants within easy walking distance. The Theatreworks venue is also available for hire, for:
• Productions covering the range of artistic mediums of dance, performance, comedy, readings, musicals and cabaret
