Inspired by the intricate, tactile and initmate nature of the pop-up books from his childhood, Phillip Adams, Artistic Director of Melbourne-based dance company BalletLab, creates Origami, a 70 minute work (no intermission) for a cast of seven dancers.  Choreographically, Adams explores the expression of folding paper and how its inherent two-dimensionality lends itself to the presentation of movement and texture.  The floor is covered in white, crisp tatami mats.  Part of the set design, they constantly move and shift, manipulated by the dancers during the performance.  The set includes a large-scale origami (paper) object and mobile standing panels - offering a dynamic physical relationship within the stage space as they are folded and unfolded.  This stunning set provides underlying emotion and drama to Origami.

The choreography consists of complex architectural partnering that, at times, directly correlates to origami construction manuals.  The dancers' actions are set within the architectural crevices created by the set.  Falling bodies slide quietly through the designed spaces, folding and creating valleys and mounds - thus the choreography becomes a landscape of origami.
