Theatre historian, director and dramaturge Julian Meyrick and award-winning Israeli playwright, screenwriter and activist Motti Lerner discuss
the nature of political theatre and whether life can get in the way of art.
Some of the issues addressed will be:
* creating political art in “safe” environments
like Australia, and in conflict-ridden societies
like Israel
* the nature of “truth” in theatre
* who is allowed to speak for others?
* how far can art push the boundaries in
confronting controversial issues?
Playwright and screenwriter Motti Lerner is based at Tel Aviv University, and has been a long-time activist in the peace movement. He lectures on playwriting, the Israeli theatre, and especially on the Israeli–Palestinian conflict.
Julian Meyrick is a Research Fellow at La Trobe University. He has also been Associate Director and Literary Advisor at the MTC, and has directed productions for many theatre companies, including his
own Kickhouse Theatre. He has written a history of the MTC, the Nimrod Theatre and a Currency Platform Paper.
