"Fingers are pointed. Accusations are made. Hysteria begins to affect more and more people in a small rural community. Friendships and loyalties are tested. Reputations are destroyed. The law and the church intervene. Death awaits some. Is this the work of the devil or something even more evil like human nature?
Arthur Miller's still chilling parable sets its action in the 1692 Salem witch hunts but its tale is a powerful allegory of events in the middle twentieth century that still rings true in these supposedly more enlightened times. Fear is still sold to us by our governments, individuals can still be demonised, religion still divides and what we now call terror apparently still needs a war to stop it.
Salem's nooses still swing for some today.”
