Back to Back Theatre’s idiosyncratic voice circumnavigates the universe. The company’s contemporary work defies convention, challenges logic and questions the imperative to be ‘normal’.
If Back to Back Theatre Company did not exist, it's doubtful anyone would have the imagination to invent its unrivalled success - The Age
Back to Back Theatre is one of Australia’s leading contemporary theatre companies.
Based in Geelong, Victoria, Back to Back is driven by an ensemble of seven actors perceived to have intellectual disabilities.
The only professional theatre company in Geelong, Back to Back Theatre is a multi-award-wining, globe-trotting success story.
Throughout its 22-year history, Back to Back has forged its own unique relationship to theatre, developing an original, distinctive artistic voice with an emphasis on the ensemble’s own commentaries on broad social and cultural dialogue and a working process that supports its ensemble of actors at its creative core.
The ensemble create all of their own work through a process of research, improvisation and scripting in collaboration with the Artistic Director, Bruce Gladwin and guest artists.
Over the last 3 years Back to Back has toured its work to 31 cities nationally and internationally and won a string of prestigious awards in Australia and abroad including a prestigious Bessie Award in New York for small metal objects and most recently, the Kit Denton Fellowship for its new work in development, GANESH VERSUS THE THIRD REICH.
In addition to its professional program, Back to Back advocates for people with disabilities by delivering outstanding ongoing community programs. The community programs provide young people with disabilities with the unique opportunity to engage with contemporary arts practice on an ongoing basis with outcomes that have a positive and lasting impact on the lives of the participants.
