The Drowning Girls is a true crime story, based on the infamous “Brides of the Baths” murders in Britain from 1912-1914.
George Joseph Smith was an Edwardian bigamist and serial killer who targeted lonely, wealthy women. He courted them, married them and then promptly drowned them in their baths, making off with their life insurance policies.
This is the story of the last three women who fell in love with him; an investigation of how utterly vulnerable love makes us.
The murdered brides surface from bathtubs filled with water to gather evidence and present their case against their husband. While the events are removed from us by geography and time, the story is not unfamiliar.
Domestic violence against women is a still a hidden problem in our communities. A recent study shows that intimate partner homicides account for one-fifth of all homicides in Australia.
The Drowning Girls is a devastating tale told with gallows humour and graceful beauty.
Turtle Lab is proud to announce their support of the White Ribbon Campaign throughout their season. The White Ribbon Campaign is an initiative to end violence against women.
There will be a Q&A session after the show on February 15 with expert panelists involved in gender violence prevention.

Three brides, three bath tubs, three murders and all with enough in common to prompt Scotland Yard to investigate and sentence to death Edwardian bigamist and serial killer George Joseph Smith.
