Black Lung Theatre

The Black Lung is a white walled studio, a curated independent theatre and art space, incorporating resident and visiting companies dedicated to new, experimental and devised theatre and a not-for-profit, incorporated association. The Black Lung Theatre Opened on 21 April 2006 with enormous support from artistic and local communities.

The Black Lung Theatre has been the recipient of numerous awards since its inception. Most recently at the 2007 Adelaide Fringe, where The Black Lung converted an abandoned building into a licensed theatre and presented five productions. 2006 Melbourne Fringe: Best Production, Best Actor (Dylan Young), Adelaide Fringe Touring Grant 2007 Adelaide Fringe: Best Production, Best Venue, Adelaide Advertiser Award. The Black Lung Theatre will represent a body of work generated by both the body of the company and invited companies/artists. The Theatre offers new and established artists the capacity to establish and refine work in philosophy and practice through greater rehearsal periods and through generating a community of artists of various disciplines and aesthetics. We intend to create an environment which allows independent works to be seen by a greater audience than would normally be possible.

The Theatre is intended as an artistic launching pad; a space where works may originate and find influence and impetus to expand and develop into new and diverse forms. The Theatre will also provide for the exhibition of other art forms in out of time and off season periods, be it sculpture, recording and sound installations, painting, photography or film. The Black Lung is operated under the auspices of Artistic Directors Thomas Wright and Thomas Henning. The fundamental vision of the directors of The Black Lung is that the Theatre operates with integrity and artistic vision and that the name, The Black Lung, be synonymous with excellence, bravery and innovation in the arts; particularly in forms of new, avant garde and devised theatrical works.
