An anthropologist backtracking through the high points of US stage drama would probably end up back in Europe with Ibsen. 

Yet while Ibsen traded in absolutes - seeking to isolate and distil them - Eugene O'Neill, for one, focused on specific pathologies. 

Ibsen was interested in the sins of the fathers, O'Neill was more interested in the sins of his own father.
