MAGNORMOS PRESENTS
The 2007 OzMade Musicals ConcertMonday 10 December at 8pm
Athenaeum Theatre, 188 Collins St, Melbourne
The
OzMade Musicals concert is a musical theatre showcase presenting some of Australia’s leading artists performing excerpts from old and new Australian musicals.
Tony Sheldon, star of Priscilla Queen of the Desert - the Musical will host the concert, and introduce other stars including Nancye Hayes, Toni Lamond, Silvie Paladino, Sally Bourne, along with Lisa-Marie Charalambous who played the title role in the recent Magnormos production Mary Bryant.
Now in its fifth year OzMade Musicals is an annual celebration and showcase of local musical theatre writers featuring material from across Australia, which is presented during the concert in a section called On The Drawing Board.
On The Drawing Board is a special opportunity to present un-produced works of Australian musical theatre, and works in progress. The works are performed for an audience that includes industry peers, critics, producers, and the general public. The submissions have been selected by a national panel: Professor Peter Fitzpatrick, Stuart Hendricks, Dr. Peter Wyllie Johnston, Ellie Nielsen, Kristin Keam, David King, Aaron Joyner and Tony Sheldon.
On The Drawing Board 2007 will present:
Suddenly Single by Peter Pinne and Paul Dellit (QLD)
The Happy Medium by Peter J Casey (ACT)
Suddenly Single follows the live of three twenty-something guys, Ryan (Electrician), Aaron (IT Specialist) and Luke (S.N.A.P. Sensitive New Age Priest), over a six year period, as they negotiate the minefield of love and relationships in the world today. The show is an amusing but honest look at metro-sexuals, and their attitudes to body image, marriage, family, cheating and the responsibilities of life. There is worldwide interest in one of the songs Making A Difference, which will be released in Europe by Sony in 2008.
The Happy Medium is set in 1993, and Paul Medforth seems destined to become a star of the Australian musical theatre scene. After Paul wins the lead role in The Count of Monte Cristo, he dreams of something more substantial, and Australian. Will he succumb to the lure of a pop career or stick to his artistic guns? The show is a hilarious look at the state of musical theatre in Australia.
OzMade Musicals 2007 will also remember highlights from existing Australian musicals including Careful He Might Hear You, Summer Rain, Mary Bryant, Sideshow Alley, and Love Equals, performed by Australia’s leading-ladies.
The first OzMade Musicals concert took place in 2003 as part of the launch of Federation Square. Since then, Magnormos has developed the concert into a vibrant and active force in the promotion, development and sustainability of Australian-written musical theatre.
