Based on real events.

The true story of Mary Bryant is an astonishing tale of hardship and determination during the settlement of Australia.

Young Mary is sentenced to seven years' deportation to the Botany Bay penal colony, far from her English home. On the journey she meets and marries convict Will Bryant, and they, with their child and three other convicts, embark on one of the most incredible voyages in sailing history.

Escaping to sea on the colony's small fishing boat, the journey took them 3,250 miles to the Dutch colony of Timor, and ultimately back into the British penal system - where the survivors earned a landmark reprieve.

Mary Bryant was originally commissioned by the WA Academy of Performing Arts, and performed there as The Voyage of Mary Bryant in 1996. A revised version was presented in NSW as an Ensemble Theatre production in 1998, and this will be the version presented by Magnormos. In 2006, the television mini-series Mary Bryant was a ratings smash-hit and with production costs around $16 million, was the most expensive miniseries produced in Australia.

Magnormos Prompt Musicals Program

The Magnormos Prompt Musicals Program is a ‘Studio Season’ of musical theatre works, presenting compact, but potent performances of musicals that may otherwise not have had the opportunity to be heard live in Australia.

The Prompt Musicals program is an evolution of the successful Music Theatre Readings Program, which presented the Australian premiers of Stephen Sondheim’s first musical Saturday Night (2003) and Mel Brook’s first Broadway collaboration Archy & Mehitabel (2005), and most recently the Australian musicals A Bunch of Ratbags (2005) and The Beauty Spot (2006).

Mary Bryant is the third presentation of the 2007 Prompt Musicals Program season 'Strong Women in Song', following the world premiere of new Australian musical Love Equals by Craig Christie and Kristin Keam in May, and the Australian premiere of John Kander & Fred Ebb's Flora the Red Menace.

Deadline: 25th Aug 2005
